Some of our favourite spots in Calgary.
The vibe is punk rock, but the “Japanese-ish” cuisine is casually serious. Gorilla Whale doesn’t take reservations, so arrive early for mango sake bomb cocktails, foie gras wagyu burgers, and incredibly tender confit pork belly yakitori grilled over binchotan charcoal.
A Calgary institution, the King Eddy is back to its former glory. Once the King Edward Hotel and now part of the National Music Centre, head here for live music, quirky patrons, Southern inspired eats, and a mix tape of old and new cultures.
DESIGN ON DENIM
Your destination for all things denim, Dutil sports a solid selection of cult faves, designer jeans, and Canadian-made classics. Also offered: alteration, repair, and recycling.
Steps away from Le Germain Hotel Calgary, Bar Von Der Fels is an intimate 28-seat wine bar with a speakeasy vibe. Pouring hard-to-find wines by the glass, the kitchen serves French and Italian classics until midnight.
Its house-made pasta and four-hour happy hour may be crush-worthy, but it’s the brunch menu at this Oliver & Bonacini eatery you’ll fall in love with. Try the lavender pancakes or opt for a cheesy breakfast calzone washed down with mimosas.
