Construction of 10 Alt Hotels in Canada - Groupe Germain announces a 240 million dollar investment with a 120 million dollar windfall for Québec

"We will be at the forefront of the modernization of the Canadian hotel industry"
- Christiane and Jean-Yves Germain, co-presidents, Groupe Germain

Groupe Germain announced today, during a speech at the Canadian Club, an investment of 240 million dollars into the construction of ten ALT hotels, over the course of the next five years.

To this end, twenty-seven sites were identified and six of them are currently being secured. In Toronto, a first ALT Hotel will be built at Pearson International Airport and a second site is being secured in the downtown area for a hotel in the capital city. Groupe Germain wants to break into the Maritimes market with the development of a first ALT Hotel in Halifax. In Montréal, the Groupe announced the development of an ALT Hotel in the Griffintown area. This hotel will be integrated into a multi-use complex including offices, homes and businesses. The company is also looking for a site in Winnipeg, a city that is experiencing significant growth in the country. Finally, in Calgary, two locations were selected, the first near the Stampede site and the second near the airport. Four other ALT Hotels will be added to these six hotels over the next five years.

"In terms of the market, rarely has there been a more conducive time for investment in the hotel sector where there needs to be a renewal of the type of services offered in order to meet the needs of a new generation of tourists and business people. We intend to be at the forefront of the modernization of the Canadian hotel industry," said Jean-Yves Germain.

"ALT Hotel is for a generation of environmentally conscious travellers, who consume differently and who have redefined their concept of luxury. ALT Hotel is a trendy and modern alternative to traditional three-star hotels," said Christiane Germain.

Groupe Germain is proud of the economic benefits that Québec receives thanks to its investments, 50% of the expenses related to the construction of an ALT Hotel, which is 12 million dollars, will be spent in the province, chiefly in the pre-fabrication of ALT Hotels. Over the next five years 120 million dollars will be injected into the Québec economy.

Since it was founded in 1988, Groupe Germain has generated 1.6 million overnight stays. The projects announced today will more than double that number.
