Saskatoon : by the river

Famously called the Paris of the Prairies because of the eight bridges that crisscross the South Saskatchewan River, Saskatoon’s charm is forever on the rise.

Once considered the little sister of bustling Regina to the south, this river city is making new fans thanks to its natural wonders, robust creative community, and burgeoning food scene.

Visitors are immediately enchanted by Saskatoon’s striking architecture. Among the best is the riverside Delta Bessborough hotel, built to resemble a Bavarian castle. It welcomed its first guest in 1935 and features decorative elements including dragons, gargoyles, and even a unicorn.

As home to two universities, Saskatoon’s food and drink scene welcomes the young and young at heart with tap rooms, distilleries, coffee shops, and innovative restaurants. For a vintage touch, there’s Baba’s Homestyle Perogies where the pinching has been going on for three decades. It’s also believed to be the world’s only restaurant offering a perogy drive-thru. Ultra trendy Ayden Kitchen & Bar serves smoked lake trout and an heirloom tomato and watermelon salad to a foodie crowd.

ESSENTIAL TO BRING BACK

Named for the berry that grows wild throughout the Prairies, a visit to Saskatoon demands a berry-themed souvenir. A visit to The Berry Barn requires taking home some preserves, chocolates, and tea, all flavoured with—you guessed it—Saskatoon berries.
