Halifax: the Maritime’s treasure

Halifax is such a charming city!

Halifax, a likeable seaport city founded in 1749, has many charms, but arguably none more so than a walk along its wide, weathered harbourfront boardwalk. The waterfront buzzes with cool shops and restaurants, the Seaport Farmers’ Market, and can’t-miss attractions, from the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic and the Discovery Centre to the inspiring Canadian Immigration Museum at Pier 21.

As Atlantic Canada’s largest city, Halifax is at once large yet small, old yet new, edgy yet warmed by a friendly Maritime feel. With a walkable downtown, it’s best explored on foot. Wander through hip neighbourhoods, such as the up-and-coming North End and the eclectic Spring Garden Road, where the award-winning Halifax Public Library and the peaceful Public Gardens share space with blocks and blocks of fun shopping, bars, and cafés.

For the complete experience, eat fish & chips or a donair (Halifax’s official food). Enjoy brunch at EDNA and dinner at The Bicycle Thief. Sample a microbrew or book a tour of Alexander Keith’s Brewery, where animators make 1863 Halifax life come alive. Ride the scenic, 15-minute public ferry (cost $2.50!) to Dartmouth for a coffee and chocolate croissant at Two if By Sea Café. Visit iconic Peggy’s Cove, and plan a coastal hike, maybe at Polly’s Cove or Duncan’s Cove. Experience the richness of the local music scene as well as the excellent Neptune Theatre. When the day ends, watch the sun set from outside the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site, keeping watch high above Halifax.

ESSENTIAL TO BRING BACK

A bottle of locally-produced spirits from Compass Distillery, either a gin, rum, vodka or whiskey of the highest quality. Cheers!
