Canadian road trip: Winnipeg to Calgary

Fresh from a Canadian road trip with her granddaughter Margot, Christiane Germain, co-president and co-founder of Germain Hôtels, shares tales of her adventures from Montreal to Calgary.

The purpose of the journey was to reunite with our Alt and Le Germain teams that Christiane had not seen in person for many months. The trip was filled with emotion as she reconnected with members of the great Germain family, and at once she also realized the high level of hygiene standards we have implanted across the country

For this final stage of their exciting voyage, they’re heading to Western Canada, from the Prairies to the Rockies!

SASKATOON

On the road to Saskatoon from Winnipeg, Christiane and Margot were fascinated by the beauty of the Prairies, especially the bright yellow canola fields. Arriving at their destination hungry from having travelled such a long distance, they instantly fell in love with the sushi at Sticks & Stones! The two adventurers then dropped their luggage at Alt Hotel Saskatoon , in the popular and growing River Landing neighbourhood. After a good night's sleep in a cozy bed, they kicked off their morning at OEB Breakfast Co., right across the street from the hotel, before hitting the road again for their final destination.

CALGARY

After more than 3,600 km covered from Montreal, the duo was very excited to reach their final destination: Calgary! They celebrated with dinner at Chef Darren Maclean's renowned Japanese restaurant, Nupo. The chef invited them to spend the next day on his farm, which Margot, a great animal lover, gladly accepted! So, decked out in her new cowgirl hat (courtesy of the Le Germain Hotel Calgary team), she enjoyed the day, spending time with Darren's horses!

BANFF

Only a 90-minute drive from Calgary, the town of Banff in the Rocky Mountains is a must-see in the region. Christiane and Margot took the opportunity to day-trip and catch the breathtaking view from the top of Sulphur Mountain. Margot was thrilled to meet the mountain goats at the summit! They also took time to have lunch on Lake Minnewanka with a nice picnic carefully prepared by Charcut restaurant before heading back to the city. Their last day in Alberta ended with a special dinner on an island, at River Café. Definitely a place worth discovering!

On the driving playlist: I Drove All Night de Céline Dion

RETURN FLIGHT

Their return flight to Montreal with Air Canada was safe and peaceful, thanks to the rigorous security measures put in place. The travellers on board were very well protected and respectful in every regard. Thanks to the staff and the guidelines that were implemented, Christiane and Margot found the atmosphere reassuring, both in the airport and on the plane.

What an epic journey they had the chance to experience together! It was a one-of-a-kind road trip across Canada that they’ll remember for the rest of their lives.
